This true-to-life, as opposed to generic Hollywood, romantic drama features a relationship that is not always perfect or happily ever after. Chris, a quiet architect, and Gitti, an out-spoken publicist, are taking a romantic vacation to Sardinia, staying at his parent’s villa. They seem to be much in love, but little things trigger uncomfortable reactions. Meeting an older, established couple for dinner, (he works with Chris) the differences in the strength of the relationships are apparent to all, as the more successful couple unintentionally destabilizes the younger’s relationship. But as their fears and insecurities are exposed, Chris and Gitti find a second chance to discover themselves and each other. This second film from German director Maren Ade is authentic, intimate and sweet, yet also fearless, and all-together fascinating.
